KWV was established as a private wine co-operative in 1918 to stabilize the South African wine industry after several outbreaks of phylloxera vastatrix, as well as a wine surplus. In 1997, the co-operative converted to a private company whereby the members became shareholders but were entitled to trade shares only among themselves. In 2002, this restriction was lifted and shares were allowed to be traded freely. KWV Limited has a listed entity on the JSE, KWV Investments, which is the vehicle for its 30% shareholding in Distell.

A Pioneering Force

From its origins as a wine co-operative, founded to stabilize the SA Wine Industry, during which it fulfilled the role of custodian and regulator of the South African Wine Industry, to the dawn of the 21st Century, KWV has pioneered the way forward for the industry. In 1997, KWV transformed itself into a dynamic, modern and commercially successful organization and retains its place as a leading South African alcoholic beverage company.
