AERO-THERM is a new material under 1 mm thick combining the thermal insulation properties of 3M glass microspheres which respond actively to electromagnetic radiation, with aerogel, the best thermal insulator known on Earth, which further enhances its function. Copolymere-based binders allow for a very wide range of use. Hollow technical glass 3M microspheres contain rarefied (mostly vacuum) air. Electromagnetic radiation coming to the surface partly goes through to the next thin glass wall, partly is reflected back and partly dissipated. Given the amount of glass microspheres (size of tens µm), the majority of radiation is gradually dissipated and concentrated in the thin layer of AERO-THERM. This concentrated electromagnetic radiation is then mostly emitted back to the free room. This process is very quick – at the speed of light.
