The town of Wakefield is proud of the three libraries that are maintained in three sections of town. The oldest of these libraries is the Wakefield Public Library which was originally started in the old town hall in the 1800's. The first librarian was George Yeaton owner of the General Store at Wakefield Corner. The present building was given by Seth Low one time mayor of Brooklyn NY and also President of Columbia University. His mother, Ellen Almira Dow was born and brought up in Wakefield. She died while he was at a young age and when he presented the library as a gift, he put it in memory of her. When you walk inside the library, above the fire place you will see her name.
The present space now used for book stacks which is located behind the librarians desk was formerly the law
