The WALIPP charter school model is based on research in meeting the specific needs of male students. To address the lack of achievement of minorities and students from low-income homes, program planners turned to research that suggests that boys and girls learn in different ways. The tenuous nature of early adolescence prompted program planners to create a middle school for boys who are able to learn to love learning without competing for attention.

Single-sex instruction offers specific gender-friendly opportunities for enhancing learning by directly addressing many of the challenges and stressors in boys' educational and personal lives. WALIPP-TSU Preparatory Academy is an innovative environment that incorporates men in pivotal roles to teach boys how to become men.
